Abstract

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders significantly reduce the quality of life for physical therapists and can lead to a cascade of negative consequences for both the individual’s clinical practice and the entire profession. At the same time, there is currently a lack of data on the biomechanical risks of musculoskeletal disorders associated with the work of physical therapists, and on ergonomic strategies for their prevention. Objective. To analyze and systematize data on the biomechanical and ergonomic aspects of physical therapists’ professional activities associated with the risk of musculoskeletal disorders, and effective ergonomic strategies for preventing these conditions. The article reviews the biomechanical and ergonomic characteristics of physical therapists’ professional activities considering the risks of musculoskeletal injuries. Data on the anatomical sites are most frequently affected, the main risk factors, and the professional tasks that have the greatest impact on the development of excessive biomechanical stress are summarized. A specific focus is placed on biomechanical and ergonomic strategies for the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders caused by occupational activities. It has been determined that the main ergonomic approaches in this context include the rational organization of the workspace, the use of height-adjustable equipment, the application of assistive devices for patient transfer, adherence to safe movement strategies, optimization of work and rest schedules, development of ergonomic awareness among specialists, and a culture of occupational safety. The materials of the article can be used to support the professional education of physical therapists, and to develop measures for the prevention of musculoskeletal injuries associated with the professional activities of physical therapists.
